Immigration to Manitoba growing in Canada

The province of Manitoba achieved the highest annual immigration rate in Canada as a record number of newcomers settle there, Statistics Canada reported yesterday.
In recent years, Manitoba has been recruiting immigrants to avert a predicted labour shortage. As a result, more than 50,000 newcomers settled in the province between 1999 and 2006. The province plans to boost immigration levels even more over the next decade.
By 2025, Manitoba will depend solely on immigration for population growth with declining birth rates and an aging population.
“We need to have a dynamic immigration program if we’re going to continue to grow Manitoba and grow our economy.” Labour and Immigration Minister Nancy Allan said in an interview.
September’s Statscan report found that immigrants who settle in Manitoba have been fortunate - they tend to get jobs more quickly and easily than those in the rest of the country. To support new immigrants, funding for settlement services, such as language, interpretation and intercultural training programs in the province has more than doubled in the past year and a half.
